Who the BCG vaccine is for

The BCG vaccine protects against tuberculosis and is especially important for protecting babies and young children against the most serious forms of the disease, such as TB meningitis. It is generally recommended for at-risk infants and children, people exposed to TB through their work such as some healthcare and laboratory staff, and certain longer-stay travellers to higher-incidence countries. A clinician confirms whether the vaccine is appropriate for you at your appointment.

When a TB test is needed first

Some people need a tuberculosis test before being vaccinated, to check for prior infection. As a general rule this applies from around six years of age, and to younger children who have spent extended periods in a higher-incidence country or had close contact with someone with active TB. We will tell you whether a test is required when you book so the right appointments are arranged from the start.
